About the Program

Program Description

Medical and Simulation Education fellows work with multiple departments and professionals to develop simulation and skills-based curricula. They are involved in the development, implementation, facilitation, and debriefing of simulation sessions, both in the simulation center and in clinical environments (in-situ). Fellows lead multiple curricular development projects, involving both individual departments/units and interprofessional teams.

While concurrently being enrolled in a master's level program, fellows combine formal education with experiential learning and direct feedback, to maximize the opportunity to acquire and refine their knowledge and skills. Fellows also are involved in developing non-simulation based educational activities for learners in their home department.

What Sets Us Apart?

State-of-the-art, hospital-based simulation center

Simulation and Medical Education fellows learn how to facilitate simulation and debriefing sessions for a wide variety of learners, disciplines, and professions. In-situ simulation is also regularly conducted, occurring within our patient care areas.

Opportunities to develop expertise in Simulation and Medical Education

Our fellowship is a combined simulation and medical education program. Our curriculum allows fellows to tailor their projects to areas most germane to their planned future career.

1 and 2 year fellowship options

For the 1-year Fellowship, a certificate will be earned by taking Masters Level Courses. The 2-year Fellowship allows our Fellows to earn a Master’s degree in Health Professions Education from one of a few top-tier Online Programs.

Individual attention and leadership opportunities

Fellows receive a great deal of one-on-one time from the Fellowship Director and Simulation Center Director, Manager, Educator, and Technician. During the program, Fellows are also generally able to assume a leadership role in their respective residency program at Hennepin Healthcare, functioning as a junior APD. Upon completion of the Simulation and Medical Education Fellowship, graduates are well prepared to take on leadership roles in Simulation Centers, Medical Schools, Residency Programs, or Hospital Administration.

About Our Facility

The 10,000-square-foot Interdisciplinary Simulation and Medical Education Center is located on the lower level of the HCMC Parking Ramp. The center includes multiple rooms dedicated to each of the simulation tools offered. Many of the rooms are fully wired with audio/video recording and monitoring capabilities and many have with one-way glass for observation. The center also includes a conference space room for larger group discussions.
