Medical Education & Simulation Fellowship

Application Requirements

Your application must include:

1. Curriculum Vitae
2. Proof of successful graduation from an ACGME accredited residency program or letter indicating good standing in your residency program with the anticipated date of graduation/completion
3. Board-certified or board-eligible status within your profession in the USA
4. Three letters of recommendation:
   • Two of your letters must be from attending physicians within your department; one of these must be from a faculty with an education focus.
   • One letter must be from a simulation professional (preferably an attending physician with a focus on simulation, or a simulation center director, assistant director, educator or manager).
5. Personal statement indicating:
   • Your interest in pursuing a Medical Education & Simulation Fellowship
   • What you hope to accomplish during your time as a MedEd/SIM Fellow
   • Whether you have any specific goals after completing your fellowship and how you would like to tailor or individualize your fellowship experience to attain this goal
   • Whether you plan to pursue the 1 or 2-year fellowship track and why (2-year fellowship includes the Masters in medical education or similar degree, the 1-year program includes a certificate in medical education)
   • Why you would be a good fit for Hennepin Healthcare’s program
   • Any additional relevant information
6. Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to review materials from applicants that require H-1B or J-1 visas.

Process

1. Submission: Please submit your application materials via email to [email protected] to the attention of Mindi Driehorst, MSN (ISEC Manager) before the deadline of October 1, each academic year
2. Interviews: Communication will be sent to all applicants in the first week of October with more information on the timing of the interview. Interviews will be held between October 15th and November 15th, either in-person or virtually.
3. Final Decisions: We will send out final decision communications to all applicants on November 15th.

• Use of AV recording and other Technologies
• Development of Procedural Skills Training
• Use of Standardized Patients
• Train the Trainer in Simulation
• Simulation Center Design
• Simulation Center Administration
• Promotion of Simulation within your Institution

We also understand that each individual may have different needs, different areas of desired focus, and different long-term career goals, therefore you will be able to tailor your training program in order to greater emphasize the areas that are of most interest to you.

Educational Requirements

• Work with simulation users to design, run, and debrief simulation sessions.
• Complete Masters in Medical Education (or related program) during the 2-year fellowship or complete a related Certificate Program for the 1-year fellowship.
• Complete one scholarly project per year; at least one project must result in a peer-reviewed publication.
• Work with your home department on the development of educational activities.

Clinical Activities

You will be expected to work as a part-time attending in your field at approximately a 0.4 FTE, with the remaining 0.6 FTE dedicated to your fellowship training.

Mindi Driehorst, MSN, RN
Simulation Center Manager
Mindi is the Simulation Center Manager at ISEC and is responsible for the operational management, coordination in development & delivery of educational simulation activities and strategic planning to ensure the mission and vision of the center are achieved.  She earned her BSN from Minnesota State University-Mankato, as well as her MSN in Nursing Education and Leadership & Management from Walden University.

Erin is an Emergency Medicine physician completing a two-year fellowship in Medical Education and Simulation. She completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 2021. Her interests are in Medical Student and Resident Education as well as multi-disciplinary Simulation Education.

Sarah is an Emergency Medicine physician completing a two-year fellowship in Medical Education and Simulation. She completed her Emergency Medicine Residency at Hennepin Healthcare in 2022. Her interests are in Resident Education as well as multi-disciplinary Simulation Education.
