Twelve years ago, I interviewed at Hennepin Healthcare as a candidate for the internal medicine residency. I knew I wanted to train in a high-performing program with a diverse patient population, but as a medical student training out of state, I knew little about its culture, educational approach or patients. A single interview was all it took to convince me: Hennepin Healthcare’s open, interdisciplinary culture, its passionate faculty, and its commitment to delivering the best care for all populations made it my top choice.
Much has changed since I completed my residency in 2004 and joined the faculty a year later:
- We’ve gone completely paperless with a Level 7 implementation of our Electronic Medical Records System—something less than 2% of U.S. hospitals have achieved.
- We’ve launched an Interdisciplinary Simulation and Education Center that uses state-of-the-art procedural technology to support hands-on, interactive training.
- Our residents and fellows have treated victims of the I-35W bridge collapse and cared for immigrants who speak more than 20 different languages.
- We’ve renewed our Level I trauma center status and received a "Best U.S. Hospitals" ranking from U.S. News and World Report for fourteen consecutive years.
The list goes on — but what hasn’t changed is our dedication to training the nation’s top medical professionals, and to care for some of the most diverse and challenging patient groups anywhere in the country.

J-1 Visa Information
Any incoming trainee, resident or fellow, who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) must be certified by the Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) prior to the start of their training program. Salary & Benefits
Hennepin Healthcare offers competitive salary and benefits to all residents and fellows, including health, dental, and life insurance, as well as paid vacation, time off for academic or interview leave, and confidential counseling through the Resident Assistance Program.
Standard Benefits:
- Vacation: Three weeks paid vacation for residents and fellows of all years.
- Parking: Free parking, provided in a ramp adjacent to the hospital.
- Meals: Generous meal allowance for residents.
- Moonlighting: Opportunities are available to all residents and fellows PGY-2 and higher who are U.S. citizens.
- Fitness: HCMC offers a 24-hour exercise center.
- Leave: Residents and fellows are eligible for academic or interview leave, which varies by program.

Deferred Compensation 457 Plan
As an alternative to Social Security, you may elect to participate in a deferred compensation plan. A percentage of your pre-tax base pay is contributed to your designated investment options in the Minnesota Deferred Compensation 457 Plan.
Insurance
Hennepin Healthcare offers residents and fellows a standard package of coverage.
- Health: Medical benefits are provided by Medica.
- Dental: Dental coverage is available for purchase by residents.
- Life: Hennepin Healthcare offers basic life insurance of $50,000 for individual coverage only.
- Malpractice: Hennepin Healthcare covers resident physicians for malpractice claims, with continuing coverage for any claim that arose during the course of the residency or fellowship.
- COBRA: Continuation of benefits coverage.
- Travel: MedEx Travel Insurance
Maternity/Paternity Leave
Hennepin Healthcare’s standard policy follows the Minnesota statute on parental leave. Requests will be granted through the program director.

Graduate Medical Education staff work within the Office of the Medical Director to oversee residency, fellowship, and other continuing education programs at Hennepin Healthcare. For program information or to apply for a residency or fellowship, contact the coordinator of each program. To request verification of your completed residency, contact the appropriate coordinator. Meghan Walsh, MD is the Chief Medical Education Officer and Associate Medical Director at Hennepin Healthcare. She oversees all undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education programs within the Office of the Medical Director. She also is the Program Director of the Transitional Residency Program. She works primarily as an academic hospitalist in cardiology.

Katie Dolan is the Residency Management Suite Coordinator in the GME at Hennepin Healthcare. Katie has worked at Hennepin Healthcare for 15 years and is dedicated to the mission and values of Hennepin. Along with her role in the Graduate Medical Office, she coordinates the Transitional Year Residency Program based at Hennepin.
Anna Thomas is the GME Administrative Coordinator at Hennepin Healthcare. Anna joined Hennepin Healthcare in March 2020. She has experience in both higher education and healthcare and is a centralized resource available to all Hennepin residents and fellows throughout their training.
